The currency of Belarus is the Belarusian Rouble – note that the old Belarusian Rouble is still in circulation, but the currency is devalued by a factor of 1000 compared to the new Belarusian Rouble. Notes come in denominations of BYR50,000, 20,000, 10,000, 5000, 1000, 500, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Money should only be exchanged in official outlets – bureau de changes, banks and money changing kiosks – and all receipts should be kept for declaration on customs forms. Traveller’s cheques are accepted in some areas, though to avoid additional conversion charges these should be in either US Dollars or Euros – it is a lot easier, however, to simply exchange cash. ATMs are available in downtown Minsk and a number of major international credit and debit cards are accepted in large hotels and banks.
